Piano Quintet

Program Note
Written in three movements, Piano Quintet draws aesthetic inspiration from Alain Locke’s idea of the folk tap root: the belief that a living artistic language can grow from cultural memory without simply reproducing or imitating its surface features.
The work explores that idea through music that is both rhythmic and lyrical. Its materials are shaped by pulse, gesture, songfulness, and repetition. Rhythmic energy frequently drives the music forward, while more expansive lyrical passages offer a contrasting space for resonance and reflection.
Rather than treating folk influence as quotation or stylistic artifact, the quintet approaches it as a source beneath the surface—a root system from which a contemporary musical language might grow.
