Ritornello

Ritornello is a chamber work for viola and cello built around the idea of musical return. Its title refers to a recurring passage or gesture, and the piece uses recurrence as a way of shaping an intimate dialogue between two closely related instruments.

The viola and cello frequently exchange roles, passing material back and forth and blurring the distinction between foreground and accompaniment. Their overlapping ranges and similar timbres allow gestures to seem shared between the two players, as though one instrument is continuing a thought begun by the other.

Recurring ideas provide points of familiarity throughout the work, but each return is affected by the music surrounding it. In this way, the ritornello becomes less a fixed refrain than a thread running through an evolving conversation.

Compact and closely argued, Ritornello explores the expressive possibilities of two string voices in continual exchange—returning, responding, and moving forward together.
