Suite for Piccolo and Snare Drum

Written for piccolo and snare or field drum, this early chamber work draws on the sounds and gestures of military field music while placing them in a more intimate and abstract setting.

The pairing is deliberately stark. Both instruments are capable of extraordinary projection, yet here they function as two exposed chamber voices—trading gestures, interrupting one another, locking into rhythmic patterns, and occasionally recalling the signal-like character of traditional fifes and drums.

Those historical associations remain present without determining the form of the piece. Familiar rhythmic profiles and martial inflections are fragmented, displaced, and reshaped into a contemporary musical language, allowing field music to function less as quotation than as memory.

The result is a compact dialogue between two instruments with deep historical associations: bright, dry, direct, and often physical, but treated with the flexibility and responsiveness of chamber music.
