Symphony No. 2, D Major, Mov. I, Sibelius

This transcription of Jean Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2 brings one of the great orchestral works of the early twentieth century into the sound world of the modern wind ensemble.

The goal of the transcription is not merely to redistribute orchestral material among winds, brass, and percussion, but to preserve the symphony’s large-scale architecture, long-breathed lyricism, rhythmic momentum, and striking contrasts of color and weight. Sibelius’s writing is especially well suited to this treatment: the prominence of winds and brass in the original score, the frequent use of chorale-like textures, and the music’s elemental sense of space all translate naturally into the resources of a contemporary wind ensemble.

The presented version transposes the work from its original key of D major to the more band-friendly key of E-flat major, allowing the ensemble to perform the music with greater fluency while retaining the essential character of the original. A version in Sibelius’s original key of D major is also available for ensembles wishing to preserve the work’s original tonal placement.
