Symphony No. 93, D Major, Mov. I, Haydn

This arrangement of Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 93 reimagines music from one of his celebrated London symphonies for the rich, unusually homogeneous sound of the tuba/euphonium quartet.

The transcription preserves the character and formal clarity of Haydn’s writing while allowing the original orchestral textures to take on a distinctly different weight and color. Lines originally distributed across strings, winds, and brass are compressed into four low-brass voices, requiring the players to move constantly between melodic, accompanying, rhythmic, and bass functions.

That change of medium brings a different kind of transparency to the music. Haydn’s rhythmic energy, conversational exchanges, sudden contrasts, and characteristic wit remain intact, but they are heard through the warmth, breadth, and agility of euphoniums and tubas.

The arrangement is intended not as a parody or novelty, but as a serious chamber treatment of the symphony—one that allows familiar Classical repertoire to reveal a different side of itself through an unexpected ensemble.
