Symphony No. I, 'Chamber'

Chamber Symphony is a compact, restless exploration of the symphonic tradition—an early statement written with an awareness of the long history behind it and an eye toward what might come next.

Taking inspiration from the youthful symphonies of Charles Ives and Sergei Prokofiev, the work engages with familiar symphonic ideas without treating them as museum pieces. Tonal centers compete and overlap; gestures recur in altered forms; moments of clarity emerge only to be unsettled again. Across a sequence of short, interconnected movements, the music continually presses forward, moving between wit, tension, lyricism, and sudden bursts of energy.

For all of its argument, the work remains anchored to D major. Its return at the end seems, for a moment, inevitable—but the symphony has one final trick to play. A prolonged silence precedes the last chord, held until the audience is nearly ready to applaud. Only then does D major have the last word.
